Jim signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge on May 15th 2008. This is only one small evidence of his commitment to reducing the tax burden on North Dakota citizens. The bigger the government, the more it costs the taxpayers.
Incrementally reducing the role of government to that envisioned by the founders of our country, with ideas like local control of education and free-market agriculture, would reduce the tax burden by over 75 percent. Jim teaches that the total government (federal + state + local) mandatory taxes in all forms including inflation, should always total less than the voluntary tithe (10%, Malachi 3) to your church; otherwise, the government is taking the place of God.
A pledge to work for more freedom and fewer regulations would be more influential than The Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Big government liberals are finding ways to keep this pledge while increasing the cost of government, by simply printing more money. This causes the hidden tax of inflation (currently ~12%). Liberal legislators can also find ways to help appropriate funds that they don't vote on directly, that we pay for via taxes or other fees.
Jim has also been collecting signatures for an initiated measure to add a new section to the North Dakota Constitution. This measure would prevent the state and any of its political subdivisions from increasing their budget expenditures more than the increase in the federal consumer price index without the approval of at least 60% of those voting on the increase at the next general election. This is a small step in the right direction.
Jim's vision is not to operate the current level of government with less funding, but to reduce the size and scope of government and stop the government from interfering with the unalienable rights of individuals. This is the root cause of the high tax burdens. As the Declaration of Independence states:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is
the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it."

P.S. Don't forget about the tax on taxes that comes from hidden tariffs concealed in wholesale prices. These pay for Marxist philosophical ends by funding the United Nations. This includes lowering the standard of living in the US such that that US will better fit into Global Governance. I wish this was note true..
